Scalp fungus (also known as tinea capitis) is a fungal infection that affects the scalp. It also goes by the somewhat alarming names ringworm and herpes tonsurans.

The main culprits behind this contagious condition are the dermatophyte species Trichophyton and Microsporum. These fungi infiltrate the outer root sheath of your hair follicles and can sometimes even make their way into the hair shaft itself. This type of scalp inflammation can lead to hair thinning.
