What is appendicitis?
If we were to explain to you what this condition is, the simplest way to put it is inflammation of the appendix. Generally, appendicitis starts with a sudden pain in the lower abdomen. This pain is usually intense, and it is a medical emergency.
The appendix is a tiny, finger-sized tubular pouch that emerges from the bottom right end of your big intestine. The waste that passes through your large intestine has a chance of blocking the appendix, which can lead to infection. The immediate effect of this is inflammation, and this swelling can cause your appendix to burst.
Keep in mind that if your appendix bursts, it is a medical emergency! Never ignore the symptoms of appendicitis!
If this happens, bacteria will spread to your abdominal cavity, causing an infection known as peritonitis. When this infection spreads through the bloodstream, it can cause a life-threatening condition known as sepsis.
