Speak with your doctor before taking over-the-counter iron supplements
Your physician might recommend iron supplementation if your dietary changes can’t bring iron levels back to normal. Supplements are available in liquid and tablet form, and many daily multivitamins contain iron.
The most typical form of iron used in supplements is ferrous iron salts, which include ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate, per the National Institutes of Health. A good thing to keep in mind is that iron supplements can be misleading.
Iron is usually best absorbed when taken two or three times a day with foods containing vitamin C. You’ll want to speak with your doctor before taking any iron supplements because it IS possible to overdo it.
Overloading on iron can lead to organ damage. Furthermore, some specialists suspect that calcium can interfere with iron absorption from supplements. So, taking your iron supplement at a different time than your calcium is generally recommended.
