In people with trichotillomania, the urge to pull out their hair can be so strong that it can feel like a relief to do so; however, it can also lead to feelings of guilt and shame. This urge can be triggered by stress or anxiety. It can also be a coping mechanism for dealing with difficult emotions or a form of self-harm.
It’s important to note that trichotillomania is often seen along with other mental health disorders, such as eating disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and substance use disorders.
