Gentle Movement for a Happy Gut

Believe it or not, one of the kindest things you can do for your digestive system is to move your body. Gentle, consistent activity can help stimulate the natural contractions of your intestines, relieving constipation and reducing bloating. Exercise is also a fantastic way to manage stress, which has a direct and powerful impact on your gut health.

You don’t need to run a marathon. The goal is gentle, regular movement.

Daily Walking: A simple 20-30 minute walk each day is one of the best exercises for your entire body, including your digestive tract. It uses your core muscles and helps encourage regular bowel movements. Find a safe, pleasant route and enjoy the fresh air.

Gentle Stretching and Yoga: Poses that involve gentle twisting of the torso can help massage your internal organs and stimulate digestion. Look for a senior-friendly or “gentle yoga” class online or in your community. Even simple seated twists in a chair can be beneficial.

Deep Breathing: This might not seem like an exercise, but it is incredibly powerful. Sit comfortably in a chair, place one hand on your belly, and close your eyes. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four, feeling your belly expand. Hold for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Doing this for just five minutes can calm your nervous system, which in turn can calm an upset stomach.
